Bullying

My daughter is being teased at school for being overweight

Symptom

When my daughter was 8 she was having a really hard time at school and was teased at for being overweight. She does have a great appetite but she plays lots of sport and is always active. I tried to teach her to make sure her portions are not too big . Other than that I really did not want to create an eating problem. Her attitude is healthy, however she was getting more and more unhappy and I am worried she would start to listen to the girls at her school. One week it was so bad she came home and refused to eat three days in a row.

Possible solution

Girls are incredibly cruel and en mass it can be a nightmare. The biggest tool a child can be given to get through life is to be comfortable with who they are, where they come from and that they are loved unconditionally.

If that means sitting on their own with a book a couple of times then so be it. It won’t last long and learning to be comfortable in your own company at a young age is no bad thing anyway. More importantly it will teach bullies that they do not bother her. As soon as they know that they are affecting you it will heighten you as a target. Sadly usually bullies usually do it because they are insecure in some way themselves. Easier for an adult to understand and logicalise but not so for a child.

To help her through this period I took her to a homeopath to help her with confidence and to a cranial osteopath to deal with the eczema that had developed as a result. At no time did she have to say anything about what was happening at school, she thought she was just going to help the eczema and I constantly told her I loved her. I refused to do anything about her diet and over time she started to choose smaller portions and say no to the extra biscuit.

She is now 10 and while she still has problems at school (who does not) she does not come home in tears every night and she is very philosophical about her friends. She is even starting to say ’I wish so and so would get over themselves and be happy.’   She is in all the sport teams and she had one of the main parts in the school play recently. School days are by no means over but I think we are both prepared for what lies ahead.
