Family Problems

My family are very dysfunctional

In the last two generations of my family (including my generation) there has been physical and verbal abuse, alcoholism, drugs, suicide, schizophrenia, depression, divorce, eating disorders, abandonment and extra marital affairs. To say my family is dysfunctional is an understatement. I don’t want this for future generations – I want to stop the cycle – but I don’t know where to turn for help as no-one in the family can!

I cannot get on with my stepmother

My parents got divorced which was fine as they never really got on. Everything was ok until my dad met his new wife. They got married very quickly and before I knew it she had banned pretty much everyone my dad had in his life including me. I tried really hard to maintain contact but my stepmother is such a cow I am giving up. My dad does not seem to stand up to her and more to the point never looks out for me. We used to have such a good relationship.

My mum is being the child and I am the parent

My mum has always been quite needy and the drama is always around her. Generally that’s fine and I accept it. However, if I have a crisis she will create a bigger one and she never becomes the parent to me. Why did I not get the chance to be the child?
